We were in a sold out arena. She’d been counting down the days to see her favorite artist live and so far the show had surpassed our expectations. But, it was after 10 p.m. and the one for whom sleeping is a hobby was spent.
As Lauren Daigle moved into a brief acoustic set in her show, the almost 10-year-old asked to climb in my lap. And in under a minute, she dozed off. Yes, in the middle of a sold out concert.
While she napped, as if God had ordained the timing, LD began to sing her song Everything. And that’s when Jesus arrived for me.
With one half of my entire world snoozing in my lap like she used to when she was a baby, the words of truth poured out of a gifted voice and it felt like the Lord was talking directly to me.
When I can’t see, You lead me
From Everything by Lauren Daigle
When I can’t hear, You show me
When I can’t stand, You carry me
When I’m lost, You will find me
When I’m weak, You are mighty
You are everything I need
As a single mom, I struggle with feeling like I have to anticipate everything, make all the decisions, and carry the load for all of us. Doing that as the only adult in the house feels very isolating, exhausting, and scary. When that darkness creeps in, my tendency can be to tighten my grip on the blessings in front of me – sweet babes, job, friends, resources – to try to maintain some certainty.
As I rocked my girl and sang quietly along with our girl Lauren, God spoke and reminded me to unclench my fists. He’s got this. He loves me – and all of us – enough to care for every little detail in our lives. To plan for – and execute – detailed plans that provide every single thing we will ever need.
That reflex to tighten my fist around what I can see or what little I have is so ingrained in me. And I’m betting it may be an instinct for you, too. We humans like to grab at things and hold them tightly.
But when we rest in Jesus, we can relax our grip holding both blessings and trials in an open palm, turned upward giving them to the one who gives us everything we will ever need.
And if you, too, could use a reminder on repeat, check out Everything by Lauren Daigle.
