One of my kiddos loves to listen to books on Audible when we go on road trips. The other loves music, so we’ve transformed an old iPhone into basically a large iPod and combine that with her Hello Kitty headphones and we’ve got a successful equation for happy road trips.
Recently on a break from school, we had a long week of a lot of driving ahead of us. Looking for a new book to enjoy with my 11-year old, I stumbled across one that I think everyone else read about fives years ahead of us. Until then, I only had surface awareness of Unbroken, the book and subsequent movie about the incredible life of Louis Zamperini. We found the young readers edition – I knew enough to know that would be wise – and were captivated from the first chapter.
If you are looking for an incredible story of perseverance and forgiveness, this is an amazing story. As I was reading more about the story, I ran across this post from the team at DesiringGod.com.

For those with tweens and teens, this is a great book. As a heads up, even the young readers edition was hard to take in some sections. Louis’ experience was grueling and the atrocities he faced in WWII are hard to hear. I’m glad we listened to this one together so we could discuss and process some of what we heard. There is some language and one instance of very strong language. But, we discussed that, too, and in the end this beautiful, painful, incredible story was an excellent example of grit and perseverance and the amazing transformation that happens to hearts surrendered to Christ.

If you’re looking for proof that forgiveness is possible in all circumstances, this is one of the best examples – outside of Christ himself. It is painful, beautiful, and inspiring.
