When life takes a turn and a marriage falls apart, isolation doesn’t even begin to describe the feeling of those initial days. Compounding the disorientation can be fear, shame, and absolutely soul-crushing heartbreak.
Factor in faith community and those feelings can become even more complex and the isolation more extreme. Church, it turns out, can be one of the last places anyone wants to show up and share that you’re calling it quits.
Years ago as I began to claw out of the hole of devastation following divorce, I promised myself I’d do what I could to make sure others know they are not alone on a road no one wants. That’s been the driving purpose behind trying to write some of this stuff down, the hope that someone else may find it helpful and a reminder that they have not wandered off into a space God can’t find them.
This spring, I was honored to be included in a resource for women walking the road of divorce. Tracie Miles has written a lovely book entitled “Living Unbroken: Reclaiming Your Heart and Your Life After Divorce” and a workbook for groups. In the companion guide are stories from women who have navigated various parts of divorce. All from a point of view of Jesus followers, these precious stories speak into so many of the layers of this hard turn some life journeys can take.
If someone you care for is walking the road after a marriage fails, this resource could be so uplifting for her. If you are that someone, please hear me when I say you are not alone.
You can check out a sneak peak of my story that was included in the project here. If you’re interested in learning more about this resource, check out these links for Tracie’s book and the workbook:
